In South Africa, our International client is an energy services provider to commercial and industrial customers (C&I) and developer of large-scale renewable energy projects, in particular solar PV.

Entrepreneurial spirit and agile management sit at the core of the business approach. The senior team combines long-standing experience with international expertise.  Due to continued growth, we are looking for a Senior Development Manager. This is a senior level role, leading a dedicated team reporting to the Head of Development.
As the Senior Development Manager you will provide the oversight to ensure the solar PV projects are effectively project managed through all stages of development ensuring completion within budget and on schedule. Working with the wider development team you will be identifying and originating new renewable energy projects, preparing initial feasibility and detailed assessments to support new projects entering into the consenting process. You will take ownership and lead on all technical, commercial and consenting aspects involved with each project. You will understand the relationship between site selection, technical design and project economics.

The development team and manage projects through each critical development phase including:-Conducting land and environmental due diligence. Obtaining planning and land approvals. Legal and commercial agreements. Managing technical on and off site designs. Managing electrical grid connection applications and agreements as well as other utilities. Obtaining relevant environmental authorisations. Managing consultants, suppliers or partners. Anticipating and mitigating development risk. Budgetary and development program responsibility. Assist with high level financial modelling processes. Other related development requirements. Establish the company as a partner of choice for various stakeholders in the business including local government and strategic investors. Support the company’s wider business development and networking efforts across South Africa.

As the successful candidate you will need:

To be confident managing key aspects of the company’s newly expanding operation, whilst building a strong reputation for the company within the solar industry in South Africa. High degree of project development experience within the renewable energy sector or in other industries facing similar challenges such as infrastructure or construction. Eight years plus of experience in the South African market, preferably working for an IPP, developer or utility company. Proven experience of successfully managing multiple projects within budget and on schedule. Thorough understanding of the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) Environmental Authorization assessment process; ideally with respect to renewable energy projects. Strong commercial mindset with a solid knowledge of project and corporate finance concepts. An excellent negotiator, with communication skills that enable you to negotiate and develop the business. Be energetic and self-motivated, keen to be part of a team that will build a business that will become a major player in South Africa’s renewable energy space. You will need to be able and willing to travel to project sites across the country.
