Senior Engineer Caribbean Microgrids/Solar/BESS,CHP/Co-generation/Diesel generation

Our international client is looking for a Senior Engineer to lead development and supervise construction of its projects in the Caribbean region with primarily focus on Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Dominican Republic.

Candidates need to have a strong background in project delivery of CHP systems and their integration into brownfield installations. Solar photovoltaic systems and battery energy systems is highly desirable.

This position is located in Puerto Rico and sits within the global business and reports to the Caribbean Managing Director.  This is a full-time permanent staff hire and commences from March 2022. The successful candidate is expected to travel regularly to destinations including to the US HQ, operating countries and other relevant locations. The salary comprises base salary, bonuses related to company performance and the chance for equity options.

The Senior Engineer who will be responsible for the following key functions -Leading engineering development and specification of projects, mostly focusing on co-generation (combined heat and power – CHP), diesel generation and solar photovoltaic in the target markets. Supervising high quality preliminary designs in cooperation with local EPCs. Leading the design review of EPC detailed designs, schedules and capital estimates. Supervising construction performance of EPC contractors during project delivery.Leading engineering due diligence activities on existing assets, where necessary.Sharing expertise and insight with other engineers within the business.Within key functions,the Senior Engineer is expected to -Conduct Client facility site visits and understand specific thermal/electric need for electrical and thermal energy.

Assist Business Development and Sales teams with project identification, assessment and development, by providing sound advice on project technical issues and assistance with proposal development relevant to projects.Lead technical analysis in project development to evaluate a perspective project; work with operations, information, finance and delivery teams to develop solutions appropriate to client needs.Be primary advisor on the selection of appropriate technologies and lead relationships with key partners and suppliers in the target market.Liaise with the local EPC companies, technology providers, and consulting firms with the goal of producing fit-for-purpose designs.

Ensure smooth design integration of new assets with the existing client facilities.Serve as a reviewer of company concept designs and third-party engineering designs.Create engineering design vision for the company and implement this through the regional engineering teams.Serve as primary approver of all company concept and detailed engineering designs, and third-party engineering designs.Perform scoping and management of third-party engineers for specialist engineering studies where appropriate.Provide engineering and broader microgrid technical input to business cases, specifications, tendering and procurement processes, and continuing through to review and approval of detailed design.Supervise EPC or local contractor construction of projects in the target market and serve as primary engineering sign-off approver.Lead due diligence investigations of existing Client sites for both internal and third-party projects that the company might be looking to acquire.Contribute to internal team achievements through collaboration.Ensure compliance with all company policies and procedures as well as all requirements of the relevant Workplace Health and Safety Act; and maintain strict confidentiality of all company data and technical information.Role relationships -The company is a global business operating within several world markets through regional offices. In each market, a local managing director is leading the team and provides regional line management. On the other hand, Principal Engineers have global roles and provide technical guidance across all markets that the company operates in.The role of Senior Engineer is one of the Senior Engineering roles in the Caribbean market, the role does not have direct reports, however all Professional Engineers in the Caribbean market will require technical guidance from local Senior Engineers.Additionally, it is expected for the Senior Engineer to support similar projects development in other markets that the company operates in, should the circumstances require it.Value chain relationship -The Senior Engineer has responsibility for projects development and construction supervision over Caribbean market value chain, the role will have responsibility over devising a CHP system and operational philosophy for a project during its development (bidding, liaising with Contractors), to Construction (remote oversite, real-time global troubleshooting).

Selection Criteria -Qualifications:

• Tertiary qualifications in mechanical or electrical engineering, acceptable for admission to local professional engineering organization.

Knowledge and skills:

• The Senior Engineer should possess the following knowledge Core technical knowledge of electrical generation systems such as –  Combined heat and power systems and their unique needs. Diesel generation, and Solar photovoltaic systems.
• Mechanical systems knowledge, with an accent on steam, hot water and chilled water systems, and associate and auxiliary equipment.
• Electrical engineering knowledge of generating systems, high voltage switchgear and breaking equipment, low/medium voltage power equipment (cabling, transformers, switching equipment) and control/protection equipment.
• Knowledge of design processes, standards and industry rules and regulations.
• General IT knowledge of design software, development software, internet software, project management software, spreadsheet software and word processing software.
• General knowledge of project management and techniques for development planning and project analysis.

The Senior CHP Engineer should also possess the following skills:

The Senior Engineer should have the following experience:

Significant industry experience in:

• Designing, Constructing and commissioning, Operating and troubleshooting generation systems, Integration of generating equipment into brownfield installations.
• Significant practical industry experience in brownfield solutions: Development of creative brownfield design/construction solutions.

Practical industry-proven and demonstrated/implemented knowledge of:

• Civil designs,Mechanical designs, Electrical and control designs.

Practical industry experience in Procurement process: Providing input to the company Cost estimators on Electrical equipment and subsystems, Mechanical boilers, chillers, fuel storage and piping systems, and civil / structural related elements, Project value engineering,  Negotiations with contractors and suppliers,

Practical industry experience in Project Management:

•   Design package delivery project management, Time scheduling, Engineering team tasking.
